18 Apr 1656 date of will
22 Oct 1662 date of probate (on reverse of will Hartshead
comes under Halifax, There is a book index of early Halifax
wills making it easy to find them)
In
the will William, eldest son gets half the farm, the other
seven children get £10. The daughters when they are
21, the eldest, Ann, would then have been 9. John would
have been 24. Robert and Gabriell get their £10 when
they have finished their apprenticeships, Robert would have
been 21 and Gabriell 17. The widow, Jane is sole executrix
and gets the residue.
A steer
is a bovine animal. It is a castrated male called a steer
until it attains its full growth, then it is called on ox,
but if castrated somewhat late in life it is called a stag.
The male not castrated is called a bull. The female is called
a cow, never an ox, but oxen may comprehend both the male
and female. A
wain is at this period probably a large two wheeled ox cart
(later horse drawn with four wheels). It has an open body
finished with shelvings, which are a framework used in carrying
corn and hay, but also suitable for a badger.
dyoces is their
spelling of diocese, the circuit of a bishop. Most of the commas have been inserted by
me to make the transcription easier to read.
